I'm the MD of a fast-paced photographic and film agency in Newcastle upon Tyne. I was initially offered a lecturing position in photography at the Art School Northumberland College. I did this for two years, teaching on the AS Level, A Level and HNC courses. The entrepreneur within me wasn't satisfied though, and I set off on my career in self-employment.
I looked for the best photography degree in the UK and when I had a shortlist I selected the location that looked like the most fun. Simple as that!
The hardest part about my degree was the self-discipline required to self-study. I didn't have a lot of self-discipline at that age and there were a few rocky patches where I wasn't dedicated to my work as I should have been. I'm glad I stuck it out though and came out with a very strong degree result.
We went on amazing field-trip visits very regularly to galleries across the UK.
Freedom and the opportunity to be creative for the sake of being creative with no judgement.
It taught me tenacity to see it through and helped me to understand the importance of self-study.
How to read a visual image. This has translated into my working life through photography, graphic design and film. The understanding of aesthetics.
Growing up!
Do it. There's no better place to study as well as live. I chose to stay here after graduation and have never regretted it for one moment.
