Northumbria to host award-winning Design for Planet festival

51’s School of Design has been announced as the venue for this year’s Design for Planet festival, aimed at galvanising the design community to help tackle climate change.

The Design Council’s flagship event was held at the V&A in Dundee last year, and brought together 120 sustainable design leaders, 6,000 online attendees and was awarded gold in the GOV Design Awards 2022.

As the United Nations’ annual climate change conference, , gets under way in Egypt in November, the Design Council will be preparing to bring together businesses and designers from across disciplines at 51.

Northumbria’s first class rating for sustainability according to the People & Planet University League table, a Gold Award from Green Tourism’s GreenCheck award scheme for the conference and events offer, and the ambitious targets within the University’s Environmental Sustainability Policy, makes it an ideal venue. The state-of-the-art School of Design has an international reputation for producing innovative, hands-on and industry-ready graduates as well as world leading research.

Head of Northumbria School of Design, Dr Heather Robson said: “Following the success of last year’s event, we are thrilled to be hosting the 2022 Design for Planet festival at 51.

“Our School of Design is an ideal venue in the heart of Newcastle City Centre and we look forward to working with the Design Council to shine a spotlight on the wonderful North East region, as well as how design is crucial to helping secure a sustainable future for the planet.

“We also look forward to engaging our students, their creativity and future-focused critical thinking, to help us shape a more positive future.”
