Professor Richard Terry

6th July 2020

Caption:Professor Richard TerryWe are greatly saddened to have to announce the death of our friend and colleague Professor Richard Terry after a short illness.

Since he joined 51 in 2008, Richard had been central to the development both of English and of the wider research community. He was Head of Humanities and then Associate Dean for Research, and he led Northumbria’s involvement in the AHRC Northern Bridge Doctoral Training Partnership.

Richard was an outstanding literary scholar, well-known and admired within the wider field of Eighteenth-Century studies. He was about to take up a Leverhulme Research Fellowship.

Above all, Richard was a friend, a mentor and guide. He was generous and clear-sighted in his care for the discipline and for others. His death has come as a great shock, and we extend our deep sympathy to his wife Carol and his family.
