Dr Rima Hussein

Associate Professor

School: Newcastle Business School

Dr Rima Hussein is Senior Lecturer in organisation studies in the LHRM department of Newcastle Business School and the Faculty Director of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion for the Faculty of Business and Law and an Athena SWAN reviewer.

My research expertise centres on gender equality, lived experiences and justice through strong institutions. This focus is being delivered through projects on academic career pathways, inclusivity in the publishing industry and the gendered experiences of domestic abuse survivors in the English family law court.

I work within and add to dialogue in critical organisation studies, business ethics practice, equality, diversity and inclusion implementation, gendered experiences of academic careers, organisational culture and domestic abuse. Being stream convener for the Gender, Work and Organisation International Conference (2021 and 2022) and regularly reviewing for esteemed journals such as Gender, Work and Organization journal (CABS 3*) and Culture and Organization, contributes to the new developments in the field.

Funded projects have included a large, mixed methods study exploring culture and EDI within a Fire and Rescue Service with co-creation of the qualitative process and recommendations provided on cultural awareness, EDI issues and the working lives of firefighters.

Ongoing projects:

Domestic abuse and the processes survivors navigate through and within the family law court system. I am currently working with third sector services and domestic abuse survivors to gather experiences of the family law court with preliminary findings being used to build intervention strategies for navigation of the court process, as well as creating training materials for professionals.

Evaluation of EDI issues in the publishing industry - working alongside a local publisher to survey their 36000 authors on experiences of getting published, to provide wider recommendations on inclusion and representation within the publishing industry.

Research expertise is translated into research rich teaching on domestic abuse awareness and intervention strategies to police officers on the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship, bringing in voices of survivors to explore decision making, risk assessment and impact on the survivor.
